Beyond Berat

The other half of Berat's shared UNESCO listing is a steep hillside of grey slate-roofed Ottoman houses below an imposing castle. Gjirokastër entered the World Heritage List in 2005; Berat extended the same listing in 2008.

Gjirokastër Castle: commonly listed April–September 09:00–19:00 and October–March 09:00–17:00, with admission around 200 Lek. The fortress took much of its present shape under Ali Pasha of Tepelena in 1811–12 and houses the Gjirokastra Museum and National Museum of Armaments; separate admission may apply.

Ethnographic Museum: on the site of dictator Enver Hoxha's birth house; commonly listed April–September 08:00–12:00 and 16:00–19:00, October–March 08:00–16:00; around 200 Lek.

Tower-houses: Zekate House (1811–12) and Skënduli House (1823) are grand Ottoman merchant homes, each commonly listed around 200 Lek. Kadare House, birthplace of writer Ismail Kadare, is usually open April–October 09:00–19:00.

Finish on the stone-paved Old Bazaar and at its surviving seventeenth-century mosque. All hours and prices above came from municipal visitor information but should be spot-checked before travel.

Roughly 1–1.5 hours from Berat near Çorovodë, the limestone gorge and swimmable waterfall pool are the nature counterpoint to two days of stone streets. Seasonal rafting and river-hiking trips operate from Berat, usually between spring and autumn.

Water levels change what operators can safely offer. Confirm the route, equipment, transport, lunch and swimming conditions before booking; “canyon tour” can mean anything from viewpoint stops to active rafting.
