Berat: The City of a Thousand Windows
Two Ottoman quarters face each other across a river gorge, each one a wall of whitewashed stone houses — Albania's other UNESCO old town, still mostly to itself.

Albania is having none of Dubrovnik's cruise-ship crowds — yet. Berat sits about two hours south of Tirana in a river valley. Mangalem and Gorica face each other across the Osum, each a climbing wall of whitewashed houses and identical dark windows. Stand on Gorica Bridge and the nickname makes sense.
Above Mangalem, Kalaja e Beratit remains a living hilltop neighbourhood, with residents, Byzantine churches and an Ottoman mosque inside the walls. Berat and Gjirokastër form one UNESCO World Heritage listing: Gjirokastër was inscribed in 2005 and the listing extended to Berat in 2008.
Tourism is rising quickly, helped by Tirana's expanding flight network, but much of the growth remains concentrated on the Riviera and in the capital. Berat and Gjirokastër are comparatively calm. That “before it is discovered” window feels real, but think years rather than decades.

Know Before You Go
Currency
Albanian Lek (ALL). Albania is not in the Eurozone. Exchange rates move; treat any conversion as illustrative. Cards are growing more common in Tirana and larger hotels, but museums, furgons and small Berat restaurants can be cash-only. Carry Lek.
Safety
The U.S. State Department rates Albania Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution, chiefly over organised crime. Violence rarely targets visitors, but use normal care with pickpocketing, parked cars and scams. Check your own government's current advice.
Entry
Albania is outside Schengen. Rules depend on nationality and can change: check Albania's official Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs before travel rather than relying on an old visa-free expiry date.
Language
Albanian (Shqip). English is reasonably common among younger people and tourism businesses; Italian is widely understood by an older generation. Faleminderit means thank you; sa kushton? means how much does it cost?
Best time
April–June and September–October bring comfortable weather and lighter crowds. July and August can exceed 35°C inland, though Berat and Gjirokastër remain calmer than the Riviera.
Getting there and around
Fly to Tirana (TIA), then travel by road: Berat has no passenger train. From Tirana's South and North Bus Terminal, buses and furgons take roughly 2–3 hours. A fare around 500–700 Lek is often cited, but schedules and fares are informal — confirm locally. Both old towns are walkable but steep and cobbled; grippy shoes matter.
Tirana airport: there is no dependable direct public bus from the terminal to Berat. Travel first to Tirana's South and North Bus Terminal, or arrange a taxi/private transfer. A direct road transfer is roughly 1.5–2 hours; bus travel from the city is nearer 2.5–3 hours. Confirm times and prices.
Berat to Gjirokastër: no reliable direct public bus. Use a driver, tour or rental car, or transfer through Tirana/Fier. Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours each way and confirm locally.
