Three Unhurried Days in Berat
The rhythm matters. Berat is steep, cobbled and very hot in high summer. Put the castle climb first thing in the morning, and leave the river and Gorica for late afternoon.
Day 1 — Arrive and read the town
Afternoon: settle into Mangalem, then cross the Gorica Bridge for the first full “thousand windows” view. Visit the Ethnographic Museum if its hours work, and wander Mangalem's cobbled lanes.
Evening: return to the river at golden hour. Dinner at Antigoni or Mangalemi.
Day 2 — The castle and Gorica
Morning: climb to Kalaja e Beratit before 10:00. Allow time for the Onufri Museum and for the residential lanes inside the walls. Do not rush the descent.
Midday: lunch near the castle. Visit the Bachelors' Mosque when you return to Mangalem, subject to current access.
Afternoon: cross to Gorica for the reverse view and follow the flat Osum riverside path.
Evening: sunset from the Gorica side, then Homemade Food Lili for qifqi if it is open.
Day 3 — Choose one direction
Gjirokastër: a full day for its castle, Old Bazaar and one or two tower-houses. Public transport between the towns is weak and the precise journey is unconfirmed; arrange a driver, tour or rental car and allow roughly 2.5–3 hours each way.
Or Osumi Canyon and Bogovë Waterfall: the warmer-month choice, around 1–1.5 hours from Berat by road. Seasonal half-day rafting and river-hiking trips run from town; confirm water conditions and inclusions locally.
For a longer trip, continue south from Gjirokastër toward the Albanian Riviera, Sarandë or the Blue Eye. Allow roughly another 2.5–3 hours, but confirm the route before setting out.
