Salzburg, in one river's width
The old town and the new town sit across the Salzach from each other, and you can walk between eight centuries in about ten minutes.

Salzburg does two things better than almost anywhere in Europe: it's the most walkable UNESCO old town on this side of the Alps, and it sits close enough to Hallstatt to make one of the best day trips in the entire region. Add Mozart's actual birthplace, a fortress you can see the whole city from, and a palace with trick fountains built to soak eighteenth-century guests for a joke, and it earns more than the afternoon most itineraries give it.

Getting in from the airport: bus 2 or 10 to the city center, 15 to 23 minutes
Best base: the Altstadt for atmosphere, the Neustadt for value and quiet
Hallstatt day trip: about 2 hours 15 minutes each way by train and ferry
