Mirabell Gardens is real and free, and is where the “Do-Re-Mi” fountain steps sequence was filmed. Nonnberg Abbey, where Maria was genuinely a novice and where she and Georg actually married, is a working convent not open for touring — you can see the exterior only. Leopoldskron Palace provided the lakefront exterior shots of the Trapp villa; it now operates as a hotel and event venue, so general public access beyond the grounds isn't guaranteed. The famous gazebo from “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” was physically moved to Hellbrunn Palace, where it can be viewed from outside.

The real story differs from the film in almost every particular. The Von Trapps had ten children, not seven. Georg von Trapp was by most accounts warm and musical, not the stern disciplinarian the film makes him. The wedding happened at modest Nonnberg Abbey, not the grand basilica the film shows. And the family did not hike over the Alps to escape — they left by train and eventually sailed to the United States. Songs like “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss” were written for the stage and film; the real family performed classical and sacred music.
