Salzburg's Top Sights
Hohensalzburg Fortress
One of Europe's largest surviving medieval fortresses, and the view from the top is the reason to go. A combined ticket covering the funicular up and fortress entry runs 15.50 euro; the all-inclusive ticket adding the museums inside is 19.20 euro. Hours run roughly 9:30am to 5pm in the colder months, extending to 8:30am to 8pm from May to September.
Mirabell Palace and Gardens
The gardens are free and open daily from around 6am to dusk, and they're where the “Do-Re-Mi” steps from The Sound of Music are. The Marble Hall inside the palace, also used in the film, keeps limited hours around private events — check before planning a visit around it.
Salzburg Cathedral (Dom)
The cathedral itself is a striking baroque interior. It sits inside the DomQuartier, a combined ticket with the Residenz state rooms and St. Peter's, priced at 15 euro full, 12 euro reduced. The Residenzgalerie section is closed through autumn 2027 for restoration, which brings the combined ticket price down slightly. Open daily except Tuesday, 10am to 5pm, extending to 6pm in July and August.
Getreidegasse
The pedestrian street of wrought-iron guild signs, always open, free to walk. Mozart's birthplace sits at number 9.
St. Peter's Cemetery
Free to enter, one of the oldest cemeteries in the German-speaking world, and genuinely beautiful rather than grim. The catacombs beneath cost 2 euro and keep shorter hours, roughly 10am to 6pm in summer.
Altstadt and Neustadt
The Salzach river splits the city cleanly — the Altstadt on the south bank holds the cathedral, fortress and Getreidegasse; the Neustadt on the north bank holds Mirabell and Mozart's Residence. Several footbridges connect them, including the padlock-covered Makartsteg.
