Choosing a base
The old town around Council Square is the obvious choice for a first visit — everything within walking distance, full of atmosphere, though it gets busier and pricier in peak season. The Schei district, just beyond the old Schei Gate, is quieter and still an easy walk to the center, with plenty of its own historic character. Areas further out near the train station are cheaper but mean taxis or buses to reach the sights — not ideal for a short stay.
Romania uses the leu (RON), not the euro — euro adoption has been repeatedly delayed and current targets point to 2029 at the earliest, so don't expect to pay in euros here. Cards are widely accepted in the old town, but keep cash for buses and small vendors.
