Neuschwanstein Castle
The castle that inspired Disney's, and it earns the comparison from a distance. It's a guided-tour-only visit with timed, limited capacity, so book ahead through the official Hohenschwangau ticket system rather than turning up and hoping. Adult ticket 21 euro. Summer tours run daily 9am to 6pm, winter 10am to 4pm.
Getting there: train from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Füssen, about two hours, then a short bus to Hohenschwangau. A Bayern-Ticket regional day pass, around 34 euro for the first person plus about 10 euro per additional person up to five people, covers the whole round trip and is the cheapest way to do it. This is a full-day outing — plan accordingly.
Dachau Memorial Site
The former concentration camp, now a memorial and museum, is a profound and difficult half-day visit. Open daily 9am to 5pm, admission is free. Getting there: S-Bahn line S2 to Dachau station, about 25 minutes, then bus 726 to the memorial.
A note on visiting well
The site asks for solemn conduct throughout — no eating, drinking or smoking on the grounds, no photographing exhibition content without permission, and it specifically advises against bringing children under 12, given the content. This is a memorial cemetery, not a typical museum stop.
The Bavarian Alps and the Zugspitze
Germany's highest peak, reached via the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen by train. A combined round-trip ticket covering the cogwheel train and the cable car up the glacier costs 78 euro per adult, and you can ride the glacier cable car as many times as you like on the same ticket. A genuinely spectacular alpine day out.
