Where to Stay
For most of the year, the old town around Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz keeps you within walking distance of everything. Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatzviertel are livelier, with good restaurants and bars, and are closer to Theresienwiese — a good choice if Oktoberfest is the main event. Münchner Freiheit is a solid, less central alternative with its own strong bar scene.
Book Oktoberfest accommodation early
Hotel prices around Theresienwiese during the festival rise sharply, and rooms for the festival dates are often booked six to twelve months in advance. If you're planning next year's trip, start looking well before summer.
Old town: Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz
Choose this area for the easiest first visit: major sights are on foot, airport trains are straightforward, and the old town remains convenient after day-trippers leave.
Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatzviertel
Livelier bases with restaurants and bars, plus easier access to Theresienwiese when Oktoberfest is the main reason for the trip.
Münchner Freiheit
A less central alternative with its own strong bar scene and direct public-transport connections into the centre.
